Why Locals Love Café de la Mairie
Nestled in the heart of Paris’s charming 6th arrondissement, Café de la Mairie is a quintessential Left Bank café that effortlessly blends history, ambiance, and classic French fare. Renowned for its inviting outdoor terrace overlooking the picturesque Place Saint-Sulpice, this café offers an authentic Parisian experience that immerses visitors in the rhythm of local life while sipping on expertly crafted drinks.
The culinary offerings here celebrate French breakfast and café culture with specialties like the famously recommended Croque Monsieur on rustic pain poilâne bread, a dish praised time and again by longtime patrons for its rich, melty perfection. Another beloved choice is the Croque Madame, although some guests note its traditional presentation could be more generous to match the café’s elevated setting. For those seeking lighter fare, the fresh, thoughtfully prepared salads—such as the dazzling Salade Niçoise, with perfectly cooked tuna and crisp vegetables—stand out as exquisite accompaniments or main courses, capturing the vibrant flavors of French cuisine with finesse.
Dining here is more than just a meal; it's a sensory journey. Imagine the gentle murmur of Parisian chatter mingling with the clink of coffee cups as golden sunlight filters through the café’s shaded terrace. The atmosphere buzzes with an effortless charm, attracting a mix of discerning locals and curious travelers who join in cherishing this historic meeting spot. While some visitors note that prices reflect the prime location and enchanting views rather than an avant-garde menu, many agree the café’s soul lies within its authentic ambiance and the timeless pleasure of people-watching in one of Paris’s most elegant neighborhoods.
Café de la Mairie invites you to experience a truly Parisian morning or afternoon, whether you’re indulging in a creamy coffee or savoring the robust flavor of a French onion soup on a casual evening visit. Its enduring appeal, preserved over decades, holds a special place for those who value tradition, quality, and a touch of local color in their dining experience.
If you find yourself wandering through Saint-Germain-des-Prés, make it a point to pause at Café de la Mairie, where the allure of Parisian café culture comes alive—offering moments to savor, to reflect, and to simply be a part of the city’s storied streetscape.

The glorious view is still there from its shaded terrace BUT there's room for improvement at this cafe which used to be one of the liveliest meeting places on the Left Bank. Steep prices are not matched by quality or some original feature that would justify them. Croque-madame served with a skimpy side of 3 salad leaves ? Come on! And when you ask for more they make you pay for it... It was good though, served on Poilane bread and sizable. Otherwise service is proficient and pleasant. Wide range of classic drinks, wines, served with good complimentary olives. So your best bet here is either a quick bite to cool down by the fountain or an apero at sunset watching the sunlight play on the Saint-Sulpice facade while you nibble on some ham and cheese...

This would probably number 1 of Joyce's choices in Paris. I have been coming here since 1974...it is my favourite place de Paris!!! When in the area always have a drink here! Their speciality is their Croque Monsieur pain poilaine try it!

Went to this café to replicate Anthony Bourdain’s picture. Had an americano and a small coffe with milk, total amount 10,5 €. Here you are paying the view and the vibes, I wanted to go for a propper parisean coffee experience and this has it all, quite distinguished people (mostly old locals), chairs looking at a beautiful plaza with an amazing church and its also in a super nice neighborhood where I strongly recommend to stroll around.

My family and I found this place on a whim this week. It was a casual vibe for dinner and what we were looking for. We really enjoyed the food, ordering salads and French onion soup. I thought the salad was fresh and my salad came with toast that had goat cheese and honey. I didn’t think the price was too bad but to be fair, we are from New York City so eating out might be similar price wise. Our waiter was…a little abrupt. I hesitate on saying he was rude because it was the end of the night and he did seem to chill out a little when there was less people so I’m giving him benefit of the doubt. He did bring out our food right away. I noticed he took our order without writing it down while holding a bunch of dishes he was trying to clean up, then forgot one of the salads we ordered. He was kind of annoyed when we asked for the salad again but whatever we got the extra salad pretty quickly after that. Despite the service, which was not a dealbreaker for us, we were satisfied with the food and the meal/atmosphere was what we wanted anyways.

Packed on a Saturday afternoon. The salad nicoise was one of the best things we had on our Paris trip. Tuna cooked perfectly! Would have gone back if we had more time.

I came here because I love Anthony Bourdain and wanted to recreate a photo he took here years ago. It was definitely the right choice! I’ve since come here three times over my week stay. The staff are incredibly welcoming and the coffee is perfect. A great spot to sit and people watch.

My wife and I travel to Paris often and never miss Cafe de la Mairie…it’s changed a bit ( for the better ) since our 1st visit in 1990 … the food is excellent, the waitstaff are professional and polite all at a reasonable price! Highly recommended, Vicki and David Greve Pennsylvania USA

Set on Place Saint-Suplice, this café has long been a quieter Left Bank perch, more local haunt than stage for show. I came for a croque madame: bread, ham, Gruyère, and mornay, grilled and topped with a fried egg. This version was lighter than Café de Flore’s, the sauce not overwhelming the pain de mie. The runny yolk pulled the plate together, bridging croque and salad. The greens were fresh, the vinaigrette sharp and clean. It was a balanced, restorative lunch and a fine example of why this Parisian café classic endures. A restorative 8.5/10.
